The emotional side of amputation

Loss of part of one's body has emotional pain associated with it that is comparable to the pain of losing a loved one. The amputee will tend to have a wide variety of emotions including anger and depression. The grief is natural and unavoidable. There will be a tendency in some cases to "be strong" for others sakes. This is also natural, but the amputee also needs to admit to his/her self the emotions they are feeling. There will also be a tendency for a reoccurrence of grief emotions in a lesser degree at a later time, sometimes years later. Of course the pain will never completely go away, but gradually the amputee should be able to get back some normalness in his/her life after some time has passed.

Amputation is a tragedy. But, the person is the same person before and after the amputation. Life is still worth living after amputation. To combat the feelings of grief, the amputee may benefit from professional counseling and mental health doctors. Note that the combination of physical and mental trauma of amputation can actually create chemical imbalances in the body that impede mental recovery. These imbalances can be treated with prescriptions from mental health doctors. The amputee must not forget to take care of his/her mind as well as his/her body.

Once out of the hospital environment the amputee has to face the real world. The amputee will have to deal with people that are not used to his/her condition. As with any personal problems a person might have, some people react better than others. Unfortunately amputation brings a "spotlight" on the amputee because of the amputation's physical nature. Everybody has a personal problem (a handicap), but not all are visible. The amputee will have to deal with the fact that some people's reactions will be disappointing. However, other people will have reactions that are just the opposite.

The world out there is indeed tough, even for able-bodied people. But, the amputee must fight the tendency to get bitter. Letting bitterness get the best of you can start a downward spiral that is hard to stop.

Also, don't forget one's spiritual self! Attending a place of worship can be very beneficial for anyone!
