Dear Anna:

You are correct. Jarice has not received an answer to his question and your's is a good one. From my experience, asking around can turn-up the name of a good Prosthetist. But, remember, the interpersonal give and take is nearly as important to a good outcome as is the Prosthetist's skill and experience.

Since no answer has jumped out at us, there remains the tried and true method of making appointments, stating that a new limb is desired, and judging how one is treated. From the receptionist to the Prosthetist, one will be dealing with these people quite frequently until one is satisfied with the fit, comfort, function and looks of the limb.

Let them know when you call that you are "shopping" for a new Prosthetist. Any good facility will respect you for taking the time to find one with who you want to work. You will, of course, want to choose from certified people. A "CP" or a "CPO". Then you just need to show up, and see how you are treated.

Just as in looking for a new doctor, you want your questions answered and your concerns addressed. Be sure to ask about insurance billing. Try to meet the insurance clerk. Is this person likely to be still around a year from now? Is the office staff professional, well groomed and pleasant to deal with?

For a woman, do you want a female Prosthetist? There are some, but far fewer in number than males. If you are an AKA, the brim of the socket is going to have intimate contact with your bottom. Is the Prosthetist someone you feel you can trust and with who you are comfortable?

There is just no substitute for doing this "shopping". Even someone a friend recommends can be a personality that gets in the way of the mutual collaboration an amputee/Prosthetist team should achieve.

I hope this has helped.

Karen
