Dear Carol:

There are ultra light limbs that are appropriate for elderly patients; however, any that incorporate a knee require some minimum degree of strength and coordination to "work".

My suggestion would be a frank discusion with the rehabilitation team, especially the doctor who wrote the prescription and the Prosthetist who made the limb.

Some useful function can be had quite simply and with a big saving is weight by using a "pegleg". I know a couple of amputees who use such a device around the house. It consists of a socket with a pylon (aluminum tube) attached to the bottom and ending in a large crutch tip. These can be very easy to use and around the house, with some practice, free a hand or two to handle/carry things. They can be unhandy as well. A possible solution might be a knee that can be positivly locked and then unlocked to sit.

I don't know; perhaps another reader will have other ideas. All I can say is that we all are just "TAB". Temporarily Able Bodied. Your father's issue with the "will to live" should be addressed with a mental health professional and/or a member of the clergy.

My best wishes to you, your father and your family.

Karen
