After enduring 62 operations, then AKA in 1996, revision in 98 and finally found a doctor to put my stump back together and make it possilble for me to walk. U of MI screwed up big time. The Best is ROSS M. WILKINS, M.D., M.S. LIMB PRESERVATION/ ORTHOPEDIC TUMORS/ BONE HEALING INFECTIONS 1601 EAST 19th Ave. Suite 3300 DENVER, CO 80218 TEL 303-837-0072 FAX 303-837-0075 www.limbconsultants.com Dr. Wilkins performed 8 seperate procedures, including removal of what he called the largest neuroma he had ever seen in an amputee. Also he removed redundant tissue, tension myodisis, moved muscle tissue to distal end for padding, deeply buried my sciatic nerve. Finaly I can start Prosthetic fittings after 5 years. I've had 23 broken bones, 1400++ days in the hospital since age 13 when I was dragged on I-75 and hit by a car at 15. Long road. I can handle having just one leg but I suffer from unbearable, excruciating PHANTOM LIMB PAIN. Dr. Wilkins is well worth the trip. I think shortening your limb by 1 inch and removing redundant tissue would be advantageous, Be careful on Doctor selection. Staci Lyn : I've been an amputee for 29 years and my stump has become quite fleshy over the years and has been the cause of fit and comfort problems of late. My prosthestist has been trying to get me to have the limb shortened one inch for years (it was amputated just above the knee) because of problems with knee hardware, and the kind of slant my leg has to set at. Anyway, I was thinking of having both those things done this summer. If any of you have had one or both these things done, I'd sure appreciate your thoughts and experience. I'm really worried about the time I'd be off my leg and "what if" I couldn't walk again. Also, should it be done by an orthopedic surgeon or a team of plastic surgeon and orthopedic surgeon? And finally (thanks to those of you who have read this far!), does anyone know of a doctor(s) in the Orlando, Florida area who are experienced in this type thing? Thanks.
: Jerry
