I swim all the time in the summer at the lake and in my pool. I don't use a leg in the water and I think it would just slow me down. I have no trouble getting in and out of the water with just my crutches. I put them in a spot where I will remember where they are and off I go. I just got a pair of Fetterman Litestix and they float so I will have to come up with a new system. I was thinking of a string with a weight(kinda like an anchor). Sand would be a huge issue aswell. Could you imagine getting sand around your socket. OUCH!! What about water in the socket? Seems like it would be way too much hassle, especially since the leg wouldn't even help with the swimming.
