: Hi all from Sydney, Australia. I am an above knee amputee. I lost my right leg to cancer in 1997 and I was wondering if any of you had any tips on the correct way to walk down hill? I have a hydraulic knee which helps me but my walking is attrocious. It gets me down and at the moment I feel my future looks bleak. I know that there are a lot of people who are worse off than me but I'm often singing that tune, the "why me blues" I used to enjoy tennis and golf but that is a distant memory now. I am 40 years of age and I still get a lot of pain and discomfort. I also get huge welts which I treat with curash. If there is anyone who has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Quenton,

I have a Mauch SNS hydraulic knee. To walk downhill on any driveway, sloping sidewalk or street, I use three techniques. First I go down the slope from top to bottom on a diagonal line not a straight line downhill...sort of across the slope. I approach the slope with the prosthetic leg leading (taking first step) and on the outside heading to the bottom. My next tip is taking small steps. Further, I must say that the skin problems (probably socket related) should be corrected by your prosthesis. You should be comfortable. The following web site www.m3racer.com is one of the best personal sites for pictures of above knee prosthesis, exercises, walking techinques I have ever seen. I know it will inspire you. Much luck, Donna
