I lost my right leg just a little over a year ago.In rehab. they set me up with a bedside commode at night. When I got home I put the commode over the toilet and was able to get in the bathroom on a walker.
I asked my prosthetic guy about swimming and he said there is a plastic knee for that purpose, but I haven't done anything about that yet.
I needed to be in a wheelchair at home,so we had to set up the house for a wheelchair.
A lot of it has to do with age and overall condition on how you can get around. I was 56 and not in very good shape, but made the beat of what I had to work with. A good support system of family and friends is a great help, as well as this site. People here are very helpful and understanding.
The most important thing is to not give up no matter what happems. He will have good days and bad days. Also mood swings. This is normal and need to be dealt with as needed.
I hope this will help. Come back to this site whenever you have a question or email me and I will help answer anything I can. Good luck.

Ron

: Hi there. My boyfriend just got his left leg amputated above the knee and I just had a few questions.
: 1) What does he do for going to the bathroom at night?
: 2) Can he still go swimming in the ocean with a prosthetic?
: 3) What accomadations need to be made at home?

: If there is anyone out there that lives around Detroit, Michigan who is an amputee I'd love for you to come and talk to my boyfriend.

: Thanks!!
