The ACA tries to link amputees of like age, gender, level of amputation, etc. You can call toll free 1-888/AMP-KNOW (267-5669). There may be a peer visitor in your area. If not close enough to visit, most are willing to make a phone call. You may also want to ask about amputee support groups in your area. Is you boyfriend scheduled for home therapy or outpatient therapy? The hospital therapists made sure I had the equipment I needed before I left the hospital. In the meantime, suggestions made by others who have responded are good. It depends on the person's health, strength, etc. It is best to be safe. Many people use a bedside commode in the beginning. A walker will provide more support than crutches. I started with a walker and the home therapist got me started on crutches when she felt I was ready. I now choose to use a wheelchair inside when I do not wear my prosthesis. It gives me the advantage of two hands.
: If there is anyone out there that lives around Detroit, Michigan who is an amputee I'd love for you to come and talk to my boyfriend. : Thanks!!
