Tell him to get used to using crutches. I'll give you a mixed message here, if you don't mind.

I never use crutches during the day. I wear my prosthesis all day long, and take it off as I get into bed. Still, crutches are important for getting out of bed with a minimum of fuss. I get up to get a glass of water, or use the bathroom, and I don't even think about putting on a prosthesis. It's just too much trouble, and I'd wake up my wife for sure. This is when crutches come in handy.

I have an advantage here. As a lifelong amputee, I can walk on crutches better than most people. I can carry a cup of coffee in one hand, and a plate of food in the other, while walking on crutches. I just tuck the crutches under my arm. Awkward, but it works. Tell your boyfriend not to try doing that any time soon, but get comfortable using crutches, because they're an excellent backup system.

If he's young and fit, he could hop to the bathroom. That's what I used to do, but I'm older now, and have had a hip replacement on my good side, so I keep the hopping to a minimum.

As for the ocean, I'd be very reluctant to tell anyone to get in the water with an AK prosthesis. I've gotten mine wet from walking on the beach, and the kneee froze up solid. Took a lot of WD-40 to get it moving again. He'd want to take it off to get in the water, but that leaves you with the problem of where to leave it. With the cost of today's prosthetics, you wouldn't want to leave it unattended on a public beach, for pranksters to get their hands on. This is where those crutches come in handy. Leave the leg in the car, and use crutches to get down to the water. Besides, it seems to me that a prosthesis would be a liability in the water anyway.

Special accommodations at home? I can't think of any I'd recommend. I don't have any.

: Hi there. My boyfriend just got his left leg amputated above the knee and I just had a few questions.
: 1) What does he do for going to the bathroom at night?
: 2) Can he still go swimming in the ocean with a prosthetic?
: 3) What accomadations need to be made at home?

: If there is anyone out there that lives around Detroit, Michigan who is an amputee I'd love for you to come and talk to my boyfriend.

: Thanks!!
