You already have lots of good responses by I'll add my two cents based on my experience - right AK 20 years.

Going to the bathroom at night: I used to hop for many years. I even traveled for business and would not take any crutches - just hopped around hotel room. However I started hearing that hopping was not really good for the full leg. I also noticed over the years that my joints don't like it any more so I use crutches most of the time. I have collapsible crutches for travel now - they fit in my suitcase.

Swimming in the ocean with a prosthetic: I don't think most prosthetics are made for water though there may be some specially made for this. I use crutches for water activities - just leave the prosthesis in the house and go on crutches. Personally I don't enjoy the ocean, salt water, etc. and walking in sand with crutches is not the greatest. It depends though on what he likes to do - if you want to do certain things you can figure out a way to do it. I think it's important to keep in mind that you should do what you want to do - and not worry about doing it in a way that doesn't look "normal".

What accomadations need to be made at home: I have never had any special accommodations at home. I'm 48 now and I'm thinking some day I might need something special as I get older. So far however I haven't found the need for any.

What I found most helpful was meeting and/or talking to other amputees. When I first had my surgery this forum did not exist nor did the Amputee Coalition of America. One of the best things I ever did was go to one of their national meetings. It is very powerful to be surrounded by a hotel full of amputees - many of whom are doing amazing things.

Good luck to your boyfriend.
