You don't wear a prosthesis 24 hours a day and it's not exactly good for your remaining leg to hop around without crutches - if you get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night for example. Agreed. There are a lot of reasons you might not want to, or be able to, wear your prosthesis. If it breaks and you can't get it into the shop for a few days; if you get a sore and need a rest to heal; etc. Sometimes just for the sake of comfort and convenience -- long car trips, etc. Last spring I took vacation in southern California, complete with the requisite multi-day, all-day amusement park trips. I did the first day on my prosthesis, which made me so sore and exhausted that I did the rest on crutches and a rented power scooter. Frankly it was a *lot* more fun that way, not the least of which is that I was having trouble getting into some of the rides with my leg on (limited flexibility, and I'm a big fellow to begin with). There's always walkers and wheelchairs, of course, and those are safer than crutches, but also a good deal less convenient. -Scott
