Definitely! In fact, I would say a necessity not an option...... I personally can attest to the damage that you can do by not using crutches and choosing to hop around. My sound leg will never be the same again, I have done irreversable damage to my knee, ankle and hip joints from hopping. Believe me it is not worth it! To make matters worse for me, I have Lupus along with tendonitis and carpal tunnel so now I am having troubles with the crutches as well......... Please take very good care of the body parts that are left, injuring the sound limbs can make your mobility very frustrating.

Back to the crutch issue;
I find, that since I do not hardly use my crutches (full time prosthesis user) that it is much more convenient to have a folding version. I personally prefer the forearm style and their is a great one on the market. See Crutch Ability (used to be Award Prosthetics crutch store) at www.crutchability.com .

I like the folding ones, because they are easy and convenient to throw in a suitcase or an overhead compartment on an airplane. They also fit well under the edge of my bed for those midnight bathroom runs...........

Crutch Ability has a couple versions of forearm travel crutches and a few of the underarm style. With the change of the name for the crutch store, their website is under construction, so if you are unable to access it, please try again later or email info@awardprosthetics.com. In fact, not all versions of the travel crutches are shown on the current site, but will be on the new site once completed.

I hope that helps to answer your question. BTW are you a new amputee or a family member of an amputee?

: Is it advantageous for an AKA or any amputee for that matter, to learn how to use crutches?
: Thanks
